Creating Quizzes

With Brightspace Quizzes you can test your students’ understanding of the content or their prior knowledge. The Quiz Builder experience, available since January 2020, presents a new workflow for adding, editing, reordering, and deleting quiz content in the Quizzes tool.

Learn to Set-up a Quiz for an exam.

  1. To create a quiz, simply go to Course Admin and select Quizzes.
    The ‘Quiz Management’ page will open. Here you can create quizzes, manage your question library and more.
  2. Click on New Quiz.
  3. Choose a Name for the quiz and optionally select a Category.

    Tip: Using categories keeps your Quizzes organized.
  4. Click on Add/Edit Questions to:
    • Create New questions.
    • Re-use previously created questions from the Questions Library.
    • Import questions from other quizzes or a .CSV file.
    When using special characters in your question, make sure to save the file as a CSV UTF-8.

    Go to Creating Questions in Quizzes, Surveys, and Self-Assessments for a detailed instruction and more information about question types.

  5. The order of the questions can be changed by dragging a question to the desired position or by selecting questions and clicking move to to change the position of the selected questions.
  6. Once all your questions are added, click on < Back to Settings for [your quiz name] on the top-right of the page.
  7. Set the Quiz Questions properties that have appeared above the questions on the Properties-tab.
    1. Choose how many questions to display per page.
      Tip: As a guideline, place one question per page if they are cognitively demanding/longer questions and several questions if the questions are short.
    2. Optionally check Prevent moving backwards through pages. This is never advised for summative quizzes, because this results in high stress inducement for students.
    3. Optionally check Shuffle questions at the quiz level to have each student receiving the questions in a different order.
      • Only questions on the first level are shuffled. If you want to shuffle questions in sections, you have to set that in the sections itself.
      • Sections on the first level of the quiz are also shuffled, sub-sections are not shuffled.
  8. Optionally add a Description/Introduction, Page Header/Footer
  9. Optionally set the Advanced Properties.
  10. Go to the Restrictions-tab and set the availability.
    Tip: Make sure to unhide the quiz from students, when they need to do the quiz.
  11. Go to the Assessment-tab and choose the setting for your Assessment with regard to grading and Attempts.
  12. Click on Save and Close when you are done.

You can go back and alter existing questions at any moment.

  1. Go to the Quizzes under Course Admin you will then find all your Quizzes questions and categories respectively.
  2. Select the one that you would like to change and click on Edit.
  3. You then may edit the name, select a different category, Add/Edit Quiz question, and change any of the remaining properties.
  4. Moving/reordering questions within the quiz can easily be done by dragging the questions: you have to hold and drag the two rows of dots in front of the question.
    Also you can select one or multiple questions and select Move To option, you can then select where you want the question to be moved to.
  5. While editing a Quiz a preview can be seen by selecting Preview in the top right corner. This option can be very helpful when you want a quick overview of the added/edited questions.
  6. When you are finished click Save and Close.

To avoid potential disruption, imported or copied quizzes remain active by default. After importing or copying quizzes, instructors can change the state of each quiz from the Quizzes tool, if necessary.
When edits are made that affect the overall points of the quiz, the instructor must manually change the previous quiz attempts made by the students. A warning message will appear that informs the instructor that the edit of the question doesn’t affect previous quiz attempts and shows how this can be changed.

By using Question Pools you can randomize the questions each student receives. This is an effective method to prevent fraud, as each student gets a diffrent set of questions.

To add a Question Pool

  1. For this you first need to make questions in a Question library.
  2. Go to the Quiz you want your question pool to be in and click Edit.
  3. Click Add/Edit Questions.
  4. Click the blue Add button and choose Question Pool from the dropdown.
  5. Fill Number of Questions the students should receive from that pool and how many Points per Question the students should receive per question.
  6.  Click Browse Question Library to add questions to the question pool.
  7. Click Save.
  8. Optionally add other questions.
  9. Click on ‘Back to setting for [your quiz.]’ in the top right.

When setting up a quiz, the options under the tab submission view allow a lecturer to determine what students see after quiz completion.
When no changes are made here, the default view is automatically turned on. To change the submission view, take the following steps:

  1. Click Add Additional View.
  2. Give the submission a name and optionally write a message to the student.
  3. In view restrictions, select the date and time at which students should be able to view their quiz submission.
  4. Check the box IP Restriction if you want to transfer the restrictions on IP address to the submission view.
  5. Limit the time a student is allowed to view the submission feedback (optional).
  6. Under Show Questions?, select ‘yes’ if you want to make the questions viewable to students. Then select the specific type of view the students have:
    1. Show questions answered incorrectly: displays only incorrectly answered quetions and any instructor feedback provided
    2. Show questions answered correctly: displays only correctly answered questions and any instructor feedback provided.
    3. Show all questions without user responses: displays all questions without user responses or feedback.
    4. Show all questions with user responses: displays all questions, user responses and instructor feedback.
  7. Select Show question answers if you want to make the answers visible to students.
  8. Select the statistics a student is allowed to see.

Go to the Restrictions tab and choose the settings to give students access to the exam (including students who are granted extra time). The table below helps you apply the correct settings.

Category Setting Description / explanation
Availability Hide from users Check this box to make sure the Quiz is Hidden from students. When unchecked students can see it (if the release conditions allow it). This does not necessarily mean that they can start the quiz. The latter is determined by the restrictions below.
Has Due Date If students submit the Quiz after this date/time, their submission is marked late.
Has Start Date Start Date/Time of the Quiz . This is the time from when students can start the Quiz.
Has End date Deadline for starting(!) the quiz. Students cannot start the quiz after this date/time. They can however continue working on the quiz past the End Date/Time if their Time Limit allows it. However, when a student refreshes their page halfway through the quiz, he or she will not have access to the quiz anymore! You can use the Due date to mark submissions as late.

Example: if you set the Start Time at 12:00, the End Time at 12:30 and the Due Date at 14:00, the student is able to start the quiz between 12:00 and 12:30 and will have to hand it in before 14:00 to not be marked ‘late’.

Do bear in mind that a student is not able to re-access their attempt after the End Date. This means that when a student refreshes their page halfway through the quiz (at 13:00), he or she will not have access to the quiz anymore. For this reason, it is recommended to set the End date at the same time as the Due date.

Release conditions Create and attach You can make Release Conditions to make sure only students in a specific group can see the quiz. But there are more variables on which you can ‘release’ the Quiz to students, for example a certain grade or a submitted Assignment.

Password Might be useful if you want to control the access to the Quiz to prevent students from starting the Quiz who are not entitled.
IP restriction Restrict  IP adresses from the students. This is almost never used.
Timing Recommend or Enforced Time Limit The Recommended Time Limit is only as a guideline for students.
When the Enforced Time Limit is set, submissions of students that take longer than the Time Limit will be marked as ‘exceeded time limit’. You can set what happens when Time Limit (+Grace period); see Exceeded Time Limit Behaviour.
Grace Period Students can be given a Grace Period when the Time Limit is complete. Can be useful for students with a slow connection that click submit at the last minute.
Exceed time limit behaviour Select how the Quiz should behave when the time limit is exceeded.
If you use Quizzes for exams it is advised to choose ‘Prevent the student from making further changes’
Special access Use this to give individual student other restriction in term of Start Date, End Date, Due Date, Timing and Attempts.


When special access is granted make sure to select ‘Any condition must be met‘ under the Release conditions option. This makes sure that students with special access are able to access the quiz.

It is possible to make exceptions for students that, for example, are entitled to extra time. You can do this using Quiz Accommodations or set this in the Restrictions-tab, as explained below.

First, make sure to set the following settings for regular users:

  1. Set the Start Date + Time and End Date + Time for regular users.
    For example, a test taking place on 9 April 2020 from 18:00 – 21:00 will have the following settings.
  2. Set the Enforced Time Limit and optionally a Grace period.
    In this example, regular students have 180 minutes (3 hours) to finish the Quiz, but if they finish it after 175 minutes or later, the attempt will be marked as Exceeded time limit.

Now you can set the Special Access. This has to be done separately for every student that needs special access.

  1. Click on Add Users to Special Access.
  2. Set the adjusted Start Date + Time and End Date + Time for regular users.
  3. Set the adjusted Enforced Time Limit and optional a Grace period.
    For example, if a student has 30 minutes extra for the aforementioned test, you’ll adjust the end date to 30 minutes later and adjust the time limit for that student to 210 minutes (180+30).
Take special care to adjust the time limit under Timing, otherwise, the student will have the regular time limit that you set up before!

When accessing the statistics for Quizzes, it is possible to either include or exclude exempted users in quiz statistics:

You can also apply for the exemption directly for the grade item that the quiz is associated with. See the Exemptions page for a detailed overview of how to do this.

When setting up a quiz you can change certain settings regarding grading and attempts. While editing the quiz select the Assessment tab and select the preferred settings for your quiz.
The table will help you apply the correct settings.

Category Setting Value Description / explanation
Assessment Automatically Publish Evaluation

Check/Uncheck When you check this option, students will receive their automatically graded grades immediately after handing in their quizzes. Scores on open questions are not included, which generally results in a low grade.
Grade item Associate grade item With this option, you can add a grade item you have created for the Quiz.
Synchronize to Grade Book

Check/Uncheck If you have added a grade item to your quiz, you can check this option to automatically export the grades to your grade book.
Student view preview Depends on This determines how students see their grades in the Gradebook. (Only applicable if you have added a grade item to your quiz). Click on the drop-down menu and choose Edit display settings to override how students see the grades.
Attempts Attempts allowed Numerical You can select how many times a student can do the quiz. Use the special access in the restrictions tab to grant individual students another attempt in case of issues.
Retake Incorrect Questions only Check/Uncheck When this option is checked, students will be allowed to only retake their incorrectly answered questions from previous quiz attempts.
Overall Grade Calculation Multiple choices In case of multiple attempts permitted (including after consult), you can select which attempt you want to be used for grading. You can also take an average of the attempts.

Afterwards, Save and Close the new settings.

After having set-up your own Brightspace Quiz. You can now add it to your Course Content.

  1. Go to Content in the menu of your Course.
  2. Go to an existing Module  or add a new module by clicking Add a module… at the bottom of the page.
  3. Within the Module, select Existing Activities and then Quizzes.
  4. Select the Quiz you want to add (in the screenshot ‘Practice exam’).
  5. Repeat step 3 and 4 in case of multiple Quizzes.
Make sure to set the module to ‘Hidden’ if you do not want the students to see the new content right away.

Instructors are able to copy previously created quizzes and create a duplicate quiz. This feature enables the instructor to quickly create similar quizzes.

  1. Go to Course Admin and select Quizzes.
  2. Go to the dropdown menu next to the quiz you want to copy.
  3. Select Copy.
When you copy a quiz, the copied and saved quiz will be set to inactive by default. To make it visible to students, click the dropdown menu of the copied quiz and select Make Visible to Users.

Quizzes can be graded manually or automatically by Brightspace. This article explains how to use each of the possibilities.

There are 3 types of automatic grading in Quizzes:

  • Questions: Most Question Types allow for Automatic Grading so that you do not have to grade them manually. This can save a lot of time.
  • Release grades: When a student finished his/her attempt you can Automatically release the grade and feedback.
  • Export to Gradebook: When you connected the Quiz to a Grade Item, you can choose to export the grade automatically to the Gradebook when the quiz is released.

Lecturers can restore deleted quiz attempts for students from within a quiz using the Quiz Attempt log. The attempt logs can be accessed from the Quiz name drop-down menu and via the Grade Quiz area.

The quiz attempt log tracks quiz attempt submissions per user, in both an overview and detailed set of logs. The following actions are captured in the Overview:

  • Attempt Started
  • Attempt Submitted
  • Attempt Deleted
  • Attempt Restored


The Restore button appears when a quiz attempt is deleted for a user. The ability to see the Restore button beside deleted attempts is now controlled by the renamed Reset and Restore Attempts permission.

The Detailed Quiz Log captures the following actions:

  • Quiz Entry and re-entry
  • Response Save time
  • Page Movement time
  • Quiz confirmation screen / completion
Moreover, within the Attempt Logs lecturers can identify the retaken attempts if they use the Retake incorrect question option in quizzes.

The Quiz Accomodation feature enables you to grant students’ Quiz accommodations via the Classlist. To enable them, take the following steps:

  1. Go to Course Admin and click Classlist.
  2. In the Classlist click on the drop down menu next to the student name.
  3. Click Edit Accommodations.
  4. Click Quizzes to modify the student time limit and/or allow right click in quizzes.
Once granted, these accommodations apply to all quiz activities in a course for that student. Quiz-specific special access can overwrite an accommodation for any user on a quiz-by-quiz basis.

How to use this to improve your course

  • It is well worth the time to build a strong question library. Take note of any questions that you come up with during the year. This will take some pressure off of you when you need to set quizzes for your students.
  • You can preview a quiz by selecting Preview from quiz the dropdown menu. Click Start Quiz to preview the quiz.
